HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO draw (2017)

HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO draw is an online performance that will develop continuously until the end of the exhibition. Each day artist Gretchen Andrew will watch one of YouTube 4 million videos titled "How to draw...". Following the instructions the artist will draw using a digital drawing pad, she will record the process and will present it in an endless loop. The drawings will be arranged on Link Cabinet to interact with each other, shaping a composition that will enhance on a daily basis. This exhibition was used with collaboration with Bouyez.

HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO eat your age (2017)

HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO is my ongoing investigation into what you can and cannot learn, and by way of learning become through the internet and its mode of defining. EAT YOUR AGE (MY 29th BIRTHDAY PARTY) explores the link between food and age as expressed through YouTube videos and image searches. Gretchen shared age-defining food & instruction with alternative modes, motivation and styles eating. Participants spent a dinner immersed in it’s interesting, constructive, humorous, dispiriting and motivating responses to age and age’s relationship to food.  They eat from “how to eat like a baby” through life to “how to drink like the dead.”

HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO be perfect (2016)

HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO be perfect applies the HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO method to the pursuit of whole-body perfection.  Gretchen Andrew begins by searching YouTube: how to get perfect...teeth, arms, abs, lungs, ears, lips, skin, and attempts to follow all the instructions.   This dive into beauty standards takes a knowingly disjointed approach, a formulaic suggestion that perfection is a set of actions and ingredients that, if repeated on loop, can be accomplished.

HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO (2016, original)

Arebyte is pleased to host HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO (2016), which investigates what you can and cannot learn, and by way of learning and become, through time + persistence + YouTube “How to” searches including: how to die, how to speak Japanese, how to be sexy, how to do a split, and how to be religious.

HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO write a novel (2016)

During the course of her residency at Arebyte artist Gretchen Andrew deployed the looping GIF medium to explore what you can and cannot learn, and by way of learning become, by following “how to” videos on YouTube.  HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO write a novel applies this process to a work of fiction.  Over seven months Gretchen Andrew watched instructional YouTube videos returned for the query “how to write a novel.”  She then recorded herself endeavoring to apply the advice into a mysterious text, a novel of unknown length, theme, format, and merit.  We see only the artist' earnest face, recorded using her laptop’s webcam. The footage was then converted into endlessly looping GIFS, the medium echoing the advice of persistence and steady work.  The process becomes the outcome as the act of creation obscures the result.

HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO eat like (2016)

As part of HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO’s investigations of what you can and cannot learn, and by way of learning and become, EAT LIKE explores the link between food and identity as expressed through YouTube “how to eat...” searches.  Over three courses culturally and professionally defined food & instruction will present dinner guests alternative modes, motivation and styles eating.
